7 Remedies for Headaches That Are Actually Better Than Tylenol

Migraines can be absolutely dreadful. The throbbing pain can be anywhere from slightly inconvenient to extremely excruciating and can cause nausea and vomiting.

Headaches tend to run in the family, as three quarters of sufferers have a family history, and can be triggered by all sorts of things. Loud noises, strong smells, and bright lights can all set off a migraine, as can a lack of water, a lot of stress, not enough sleep or food, or too much alcohol.

But you don’t have to just suffer through the pain or turn to medication, there are a variety of natural migraine remedies that are worth a try.

7 Migraine Remedies You Need to Try

  1. Ice it!

Oddly enough ice is often overlooked when it comes to headaches. Try wrapping an ice pack in a tea towel and applying it directly to where your head hurts or the back of your neck. The cold should help to numb the pain. Or you can try alternating hot and cold.

  1. Apple It Away

If you feel a headache coming on, try eating an apple as soon as possible, which can help balance the acid levels in your body. In fact, even just smelling green apples can help to lessen the severity and duration of migraines. Alternatively, adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water has been shown to be effective for the same reason.

  1. Never Underestimate a Good Massage

A relaxing massage can be just what your head needs to help relieve built up tension, block pain signals, and raise serotonin levels. Try rubbing various pressure points with two fingers in a circular motion. In particular, rub between your eyebrows, around your temples, and the bottom of your neck.

For an even greater effect, you can try using a mixture of 4 parts warmed sesame oil, 1 part cinnamon, and 1 part cardamom powder, to massage your head and leave it on for a few hours.

  1. Drink a Cup of Peppermint Tea

Brewing a cup of peppermint tea with a little bit of honey is great for helping you feel more calm and the peppermint has anti-inflammatory properties that can do wonders for the pain. Chamomile tea is also a great alternative for similar reasons.

  1. Chew on Some Ginger

Ginger is a great way to combat headaches, especially if they’re so bad that you often feel nauseous. Chewing on a piece of ginger root can help settle your stomach and has been shown to work as an anti-inflammatory by blocking prostaglandins.

  1. Fresh Feverfew

Feverfew is famous for relieving headaches and has been used for centuries due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to relieve spasms in muscles. You can talk to your doctor about trying dried capsules, eat a few leaves every day, or brew an herbal tea.

  1. Drink a Cup of Coffee

Be careful with this remedy because caffeine is a trigger for some people. But it has been shown to reduce migraine symptoms by blocking pain receptors and restricting blood vessels. Have a cup with a few drops of lemon juice to increase its effectiveness.
