Man Started Planting Tomatoes In a Trash Can. You Won’t Believe What Happened Next

Is there a more versatile vegetable out there than tomatoes? Even though they are technically a fruit, I don’t think there is. They are great on their own, on sandwiches, in dishes, in sauces, and as a side dish. Now, homegrown produce is always the best, but if you’ve been disappointed by your tomato yields in the past, I have a crazy new method for you to try that a brilliant man came up with!

Where Traditional Gardening Fails

Growing tomatoes is generally pretty easy when compared to other vegetables. However, growing beautiful, tasty tomatoes is another thing entirely. Growing tomatoes the typical way can lead to small yields and tiny tomatoes, especially if you plant in large plots. This method takes care of these problems.

An Ingenious Method for Growing Tomatoes

You want to grow tomatoes as quickly as possible and enjoy them all summer long. Ideally, you want plenty left over at the end of the season for sauces, soups, and salsa. This method can give you more tomatoes than you know what to do with!

Take a trash can of any size—a five-gallon can seems to work well— and drill a row of holes all the way around on the bottom rim. Drill another set of holes about 10 inches up. Bury the bottom of the trashcan so the second row of holes is exposed.

Dump a couple scoops of compost into the trash can. Plant three or four tomatoes around the trash can and then put up wire as normal. Water every few days.

This is literally the least time-consuming method for growing tomatoes in the world, but even better, it gets fantastic results. Because the compost will constantly be feeding your tomatoes and helping them grow, your tomatoes will grow extremely fast. Because of this, this is a great method to use if you let your planting season start a bit too late.

On top of growing quickly, your tomatoes will be huge! This method yields large tomatoes and plenty of them. And because they’re grown in your garden, you know what you’re fertilizing them with and you can choose to avoid harmful herbicides and pesticides.

Gardening Tips for Tomatoes

Using proven tomato gardening tips in conjunction with this method can help you get even better results from the “trash can” method. Try these tips to improve your yields:

  • Use rich compost that you made at home. Compost grown at home should be full of vitamins and nutrients that your tomatoes go crazy for.
  • Grow in a sunny area. Tomatoes are pretty hardy, so they can grow in a shady area. However, you can encourage faster growth by planting your tomatoes in direct sunlight.
  • Bury your tomatoes nice and deep. Your tomato plants need strong roots, so don’t plant your tomatoes too close to the surface. Dig at least six inches to one foot.

Delicious tomatoes can be yours for the having with this great gardening method. Grab a barrel or trash can, give it a try, and be amazed at how quickly your tomatoes grow.
