People tend to use aluminium foil when they go on a picnic or when they prepare a good barbecue. Moreover, people use it on a daily basis in the kitchen for cooking, roasting, baking and storing food, but what they don’t know is that it has some serious health risks and we will mentioned them in this article.
Aluminum Foil Dangers
Food in direct contact with aluminium foils absorbs the metal. When it comes to cooking, it even tends to leach metal into the food. as you can see, this is concerning and we should think about it.
- Brain Effects
If you didn’t know, aluminium has the ability to accumulate in the brain and other tissues which makes its exposure a serious risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and many other neurodegenerative disorders. According to some researchers, aluminium foil leaches metal which can reduce the growth of rate of human brain cells.
It has been discovered that aluminium competes with calcium to interfere with bone remineralization which leads to the accumulation of aluminium in our bones and high calcium levels in the blood. As a result of that, patients suffer from low bone density, decreased parathyroid hormone levels and the risk of stroke or heart attack is much higher.
Cooking with aluminium can lead to the inhalation of it in small quantities. It makes it harder for your body to purge aluminium that is ingested in your body through inhalation, that aluminium that has been ingested or that’s made its way into your body through your skin.
Sources of Exposure
We will present you several ways in which you can poison yourself and your family by using aluminium foil.
After unwrapping foil-covered food, small pieces of aluminium may break and stay in food. Moreover, heat creates little cracks and little pieces can stay in food so you may ingest them as well which is bad for your organism and can cause poisoning.
The leaching process speeds up if acidic foods or spices are stored in aluminium containers or used alongside during cooking. According to Dr. Essam Zubaidy, a chemical engineering researcher at the American University of Sharjahjust one meal cooked with tin foil can leach 400 mg of aluminum.
“The higher the temperature, the more the leaching. Foil is not suitable for cooking and is not suitable for using with vegetables like tomatoes, citrus juice or spices,” said Dr. Zubaidy.
According to the World Health Organization, the daily maximum safe ingestion level should not exceed 1 mg/kg of body weight
What You Can Do
If you consume processed food on a regular basis or you eat at restaurant or live near industrial factories, you can’t completely cut your aluminium intake. Moreover, alarming levels of this metal are contained in produce and tap water as well.
Here are a few things you can do to limit your exposure:
- Instead of using aluminium foil when cooking, you should use porcelain or cast iron bakeware.
- Replace aluminum pots and pans as well as cooking utensils with stainless steel.
- Filter tap water to remove any heavy metals.
- Use wax paper when baking or storing hot foods.
- Store leftovers in glass reusable containers.
- Don’t store any spices or acidic foods in aluminum.
