3 Simple Home Remedies to Eliminate Dandruff

Have you ever left the house in the perfect outfit, only to get home and see that your shoulders were covered in dandruff the entire time? Dandruff is not only an embarrassing issue, it can be extremely uncomfortably. Dandruff may cause your scalp to itch, which of course makes even more dandruff.

Rather than turning to harsh chemicals that may have negative effects on your health or even worsen your dandruff, there are many home remedies you can use to treat your dandruff.

Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is caused by many different problems. If you’re struggling to find the source of your flaking scalp issues, think about whether one of these common causes may be to blame:

  • Dry scalp
  • Dehydration
  • Overuse of hair products
  • Not shampooing enough
  • Shampooing too much
  • Not brushing/combing enough
  • Fungal overgrowth

Simple Tricks to Get Rid of the Flakes

The good news is that you probably have everything you need to take care of your dandruff problem in your refrigerator or pantry. Many simple, natural treatments use common ingredients, saving you money and time. Give some of these remedies a try and see how they impact your dandruff.

  • Apple cider vinegar: Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and warm water together. Pour the mixture over your dry hair, making sure to cover all parts of your scalp. Massage the mixture into your scalp for several minutes. Rinse out with water.
  • Fenugreek: The nutrients found in fenugreek encourage healthy hair growth, getting rid of the flakes that can come with unhealthy hair. Soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, remove the seeds and grind them into a paste. Apply the paste to your hair for up to 45 minutes, then wash with shampoo.
  • Baking soda: Baking soda is often very effective at cutting through dandruff and leaving you with a clean scalp, especially if your flakes are caused by product buildup. Stir 1 tablespoon of baking soda into 1 cup of water. Apply to your hair and use like shampoo. You should see improvement in a few days.
  • Neem leaves: With their naturally anti fungal properties, neem leaves are excellent at taming dandruff caused by fungal overgrowth. In addition, they lessen the itchiness caused by dandruff. Put 5 neem leaves in hot water overnight. In the morning, use the neem leaf water to rinse your hair.
  • Listerine: Though Listerine may not be as natural as some of the other remedies on this list, it is still worth a try, especially since most people have some type of mouthwash in their home. After you shampoo your hair, make a mixture of one part Listerine to two parts water. Pour the Listerine mixture on your hair. Rinse off after 30 minutes.

Dandruff is an extremely common problem, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Instead, give one of these natural remedies a try. You can tackle dandruff at its roots and improve the overall health of your hair.
